Subject: [*] AD: Barney Blaster 1.0.1 module
Quite possibly the funniest and sickest After Dark module you'll ever see!
Called "The coolest AD module in the universe" by an editor on a competing
online service.
Every non-toddler's least favorite dinosaur finally gets his just desserts.
With
Barney Blaster installed on your system, the big purple guy will appear on your
screen, chuckle (ugh), hop a few times (groan), and then, mercifully, get shot
in the gut with a delayed-fuse explosive projectile. The resulting blast blows
a
hole in your display, and the cycle repeats.
Requires After Dark 2.0u or later, System 6.0.5 or later, and a color Mac. It
will look its best in 256 colors or more, but is also acceptable in 16 or 4
grays. This version (1.0.1) fixes a problem that caused 1.0 to freeze up on
some
Macs.
Free (PostCardWare).

Subject: [*] ColorSwitch 2.3.0
Keywords: COLOR SWITCH DEPTH MODE MONITOR INIT CONTROL PANEL AMBROSIA
Version 2.3.0 implements Ambrosia Software's new license code registration
system, which allows registered users to personalize their copy of ColorSwitch
and remove the shareware notices.
ColorSwitch is a Control Panel that allows you to effortlessly switch between
the available color modes of any attached monitors. Instead of the
inconvenience of using the Monitors Control Panel every time you want to switch
between color modes, you can simply hold down the ColorSwitch modifier keys and
click anywhere on the monitor you want to change. A menu will pop up listing
the available color modes for the monitor you clicked on; just select the color
mode you want and ColorSwitch will acquiesce.
Under System 7 or later, things are even easier: ColorSwitch installs a
Monitor
icon-menu next to the Balloon Help menu, from which you can simply choose the
color mode you desire for your main monitor.
ColorSwitch comes in very handy for many day-to-day tasks. Certain programs
require that your monitor be set to a certain color mode in order to run, and
using the Monitors control panel every time you need to switch color modes
grows
tiresome quickly. Your Macintosh will also operate more quickly if you
normally
operate in black and white mode, switching to a more colorful setting only when
you need to. ColorSwitch makes switching color modes so quick and convenient,
you will find yourself using it constantly to improve your quality of life at
the computer.
Once installed, ColorSwitch uses up 5K of memory.

Function Master is an application for graphing and manipulating
functions like polynomials, fractions, trigonometric, logarithmic,
and exponential functions. The user can specify the coefficients
of the function and change them interactively to see the effects
of each coefficient on the overall behavior of the function.
The demo version is limited to { Tan(aX^2 + bX + c) + d } and does
not utilize the FPU (a little slow especially for very small step sizes).
The full version will cost $10 (to cover cat food for Sheba) .

Subject: [*] JPEGView 3.1
Announcing the release of JPEGView 3.1 -- December, 1993
Enclosed is version 3.1 of my postcardware application JPEGView, a fast,
flexible JPEG, PICT, and GIF viewer for the Macintosh. This latest release
adds a bit of functionality and fixes a few bugs that were in the previous
(3.0) release; users of previous versions are strongly encouraged to
upgrade to this latest version.
IMPORTANT NOTE: JPEGView *requires* System 7.0 or later *and* any version of
QuickTime to run. The latest version of the QuickTime extension (1.6.1)
can be found via anonymous FTP at ftp.apple.com in the
/dts/mac/sys.soft/quicktime directory.
Briefly, here are the important new features in version 3.1:
* clean, effective background decompression
* slide show interface now allows point-and-click control
* new reverse and "pause and hide" functions for the slide show
* stronger GIF support, including animated GIFs and GIF89 comments
* JFIF images can now include pre-computed color palettes
* improved modeless interface for preferences and slide show options
* better virtual memory support, via the included QuickTime VM extension
* conflicts with CPU, and two-monitor grayscale bugs have been fixed
And a general JPEGView overview:
* it's free (well, postcardware), simple, and easy to use
* requires only 600k, but will effectively use more memory to run faster
* produces some of the highest-quality images available on the Macintosh
* provides an excellent user-configurable slide show
* automatically scales images to fit on your monitor
* has handy full screen windows (without the menubar) for large images
* supports multiple-monitor systems extremely well
* includes exhaustive on-line documentation and balloon help
* is System 7-studly, featuring full AppleScript scripting and recording
* comes with a cool colorful JPEG test image :-)
JPEGView is postcardware. The concept is simple:
If you like it, you are obligated to send me a postcard of some sort.
If you would like a printed, bound manual and official release disk, register
by sending in US$20. Registration and payment are, as always, fully
optional.
Enjoy!

MenuChoice is a control panel device which adds hierarchical
menus under the Apple Menu. To use it, just drag the control
panel (not the folder) onto your system folder and reboot. MenuChoice
includes other features such as a "Recent" menu which keeps the
last 20 items you have opened from the Apple Menu readily available,
and a "Desktop" menu which gives you instant access to all volumes
mounted on your desktop.

Subject: [*] SmartLaunch 3.2.1

NEW FEATURES:
1) COMPLETELY REVAMPED! Not just a dialog anymore, but a Finder-enhancing
launching dock that's inexpensive ($5), but powerful. Requires no setup for
instant access to just about everything.
SmartLaunch is a System 7 utility which searches mounted volumes, disk drives
and servers for either Applications/DAs, Control Panels, Folders, Documents, or
Server Aliases, and presents them in a sorted scrollable list, from which you
can select one to launch or open. The SmartLaunch window is seamlessly
integrated into the Finder and a hot-key (option key while mouse is in upper
left and corner of the screen) brings SmartLaunch to the front. It is not an
INIT, and will not cause the possible conflicts that can result.
This is release 3.2.1 of SmartLaunch and it is NOT free. Registered owners of
previous releases of SmartLaunch can upgrade at no cost. If you like it, send

Use the Alysis compatibility control panel (or one of the substitutes for
it) to shut off the '040 cache mode while using the Abaton Photoshop Plug
(works for me on my Quadra 700). The limitation, of course, is that
PhotoShop will run at IIsi speed :-(
You might also call Everex back (or email me the number you called and,
if possbile, the name of the person you spoke to). I bought my scanner
at MacWorld in 1992 SPECIFICALLY to use with a Quadra 700 (the salesperson
at the booth knew that). When I found their software wouldn't run with
the caches enabled, I wrote and called. Lots of 'song and dance' and an
indication that they DID (eventually) intend to provide an '040 compatible
plug (no such luck).
As I did when I gave the Abaton product a negative review in August of '92,
I recommend boycotting ALL Everex products (Everex has owned Abaton for
years; if Abaton is 'out of business' it's because Everex chose to
discontinue the brand; Everex was and continues to be responsible for
the inadequacy of Abaton products). When I bought the Abaton scanner,
the Quadra line was already 10 months old. Virtually every other
producer had recompiled their source code (in most cases, compiling with
an '040 compatible compiler is sufficient to deal with the problem) long
before August '92.
I was one of the first Quadra owners. I had agreeable dealings with just
about every software provider that initially had problems with the '040
caches and beta-tested for several (at the time I had a Quadra and they
didn't ;-) Everex is the only vendor I've run across that seems indifferent;
may the PowerPC leave them incompatible with all but a shrinking market of
8086 compatibles owned by people who only buy from IBM.

HyperCard generates these tones. For a demonstration, start HC, open the

I hate to do it, but I have to get on this thread too. :-)
I have a IIsi w/ 16meg memory running 7.1.
Whenever I download, I experience the same problems that Larry is speaking
of. For example, last night downloading with Microphone Pro I was getting a
transfer rate of about 8800 bps and no errors. As soon as I started
uncompressing the files with Stuffit Expander my transfer rate dropped below
5000 bps with lots of errors (one 500k program had 4 errors in the first
200k). The errors are usually bad CRC's with an occasional datasubpacket too
long.
With pre-emptive multitasking, this probably wouldn't happen...
There, I've vented my frustration. Thanx for listening...

I don't want to get dragged into this (although I guess I've already
opened the door), i.e. I probably won't say anything more on this than
what I'm about to say. I AGREE with what Larry Rymal states above.
The reason I spent money I didn't have on a 14.4 modem was that, with my
old 2400, I couldn't do anything while transferring files from home <-->
school on my lowly SE/30 using ZTerm without something bad hapenning. I
still can't do anything without worry during file transfers, but with the
14.4 I don't have to wait as long before Worf tells me that the transfer
is complete :-)

you might call "token ring" MT. That is, everything that uses the CPU has
to *voluntarily* relinquish the CPU and pass the "token" on to the next
guy in line. There is no operating system level scheduler or anything like
that. I think there is no disputing the fact that this is a serious flaw in
the Mac OS.
However, I must also say that the token ring system works amazingly well.
I run lots of stuff, like MPW compiles, TeXtures typesetting, FTP file
transfers, etc, all at once, and it *works*!!
I think there are two flaws in the present Mac system: First, it assumes
"good citizenship" from all the things runnings, and just one hog at the
trough is enough to ruin everything. Second, the related problem is the
current OS doesn't have hardware memory protection, which is closely related
to the pre-emptive MT question. Thus, the whole MT system at present is a
house of cards, and one bad app crashing brings down everything.
I repeat that Apple has made this work much, much better than I ever
believed possible, but I sure hope that a shift to "real" MT (pre-emptive)
is going to happen soon.

P.s. I have tried the speed mouse software, and it only allows you to increase

Subject: Notes-Reset PowerManager on PB 100,140,145,170
A while back, someone mentioned that you can reset the powermanager on your
Powerbook by holding down the power key for five seconds as you start up.
This is a common fix for sporatic problems.
Well, I recently developed problems with my PB 140 (It won't charge the
battery, only runs on the power adapter) and after getting a fax from
Apple, I discovered that on the Powerbook 100, 140, 145 and 170, to reset
the power manager, you need to unplug the PB, take out the battery and then
(get out the paper clips!) push the reset AND the interupt buttons
simultaniously for five to ten seconds.
Just thought I'd mention this to anyone else who's got one of these and
thought that they were doing some good by holding down the power key for
five seconds after a crash when restarting.
If anyone's seen MY problem before, I'd appreciate some e-mail. I think
it's the power adapter (something's rattling inside) but I'd appreciate
some feedback from the net. Thanks. . . .

Hi!
With the advent of 'NCD' (Network control device???) for PageMaker, we
can't stick one (1) copy of it on our Appleshare networks and use
AppleShare's copy limit junk (which works quite well). I have had to
install 6 separate images of PagMaker 5.0 to allow multi-user running.
Of course I called Aldus and asked about this and the response was that
PCs (dos) were easier to set up networkable programs. I'll not repeat my
response, but wonder if anyone else has had this problem?
I am considering writing a program that'll allow ONLY the proper number
of PMs to run. If you might be interested -- let me know -- it'll be
FREE (assuming I can get it to work).

How can a hardware problem be solved by installing a new disk driver ;-) ?
I have never seen this 'problem' on my PB-100 that I have had for almost
2 years now. It could be a hardware problem on that particular unit,
but it sounds as if he somehow corrupted the PRAM ( programmable RAM
that is used to tell the machine about its boot environment) and that this
was reset when he installed the new driver.

Has anyone ever experienced problems with Suitcase II-1.2.11 and System 7.1?
I am a very satisfied user of Suitcase. Up to now I used it on an old
Plus with 2.5 Mb RAM, running System 6.05, and everything went smooth.
I also installed it on a couple of newer Macs, running System 7.0, again
no problems at all.
But now I'm the proud owner of an LC-III with 12 Mb RAM, that came shipped
with a DUTCH version of System 7.1 which I installed from the floppies to the
empty hard-disk. (All the above mentioned systems were plain US versions.)
I just transferred everything to the new machine and I've seen some problems.
I've only added the standard Mac-delivered extra's, like keycaps,
scrapbook etc. Also added are After Dark, Adobe Type Align,
Adobe Type Reunion and Adobe Type Manager. And of course my beloved
Suitcase II.1.2.11
- The first problem is Suitcase. It's icon is displayed during start-up and
it apears in the Apple-menu. But when clicked on, the screen flashes momen-
tarily just as it does on my older Macs, and then: nothing! I just get
the normal desktop back and everything runs as it did before.
- The second problem is the portion of RAM taken by the System. When I
use 'about the finder' it tells me the system takes up about 6Mb. At the
moment that's no problem, because I have 12 Mb available, but I don't
think it should be this large: how could he standard LC-III with it's
4 Mb ever accomodate a system of this size?
So I have two questions:
- what did I do wrong that caused the system to take up so much RAM (could
it be the ca. 12 After Dark modules?),
- and has anyone ever experienced a problem with a (dutch) system 7.1 in
combination with Suitcase II.1.2.11? Is there a solution to this?

Subject: REAL Multitasking (C)
Text item: Text_1
I just caught the discussion a couple issues back on doing modem transfers
in the background. It seems really weird that the (seemingly) general
consensus is that the Mac is POOR at this (multi)task. I don't get it, my
Mac SE is a champ at this stuff. When I first got System7, I routinely
would do 4 or 5 things at once. Typically, I would do modem file
transfers, DeBinHex (with DeHQX 2), Stuff/UnStuff, and be using Word to
read/edit -- plus a screen saver keeping time. Granted, all of these items
were not ALWAYS running simultaneously, but I made it a point sometimes to
get as many apps running concurrently to demo Sys7 to some of my friends.
So, my point is that on a Mac SE, this multitasking is real and solid, and
there was no noticeable slow-down of foreground tasks. Of course, the SE
is no speed demon, so in general things are somewhat "slow" (at least
compared to today's machines), but I'm referring to a slow-down relative to
normal operation.
This raises the question: On today's faster processors, has Apple somehow
failed to optimize System 7's time allocation between processes? Afterall,
"multitasking" is a misnomer on a single processor machine. System 7 uses
a cooperative scheme so all apps give up the processor to other apps.
Perhaps something in the new Macs doesn't let the modem get the system time
it needs to do transfers. Anyway, it's got to be something new, since the
68000-based SE has no trouble doing modem transfers as a background task.

A section "literature" might be appropriate.

Subject: WordPerfect 3 is a dog
WordPerfect 3 has been much praised recently and even touted as the best
word processing program. I have finally received the long backordered
Competitive Trade-Up (the gall!) version, and I am aghast.
Let me first make clear that even if I was predjudiced, it was in favor.
Here was this new powerful application, not coming from Redmond, and
WorldScript Savvy to boot, but with no dongle unlike Nisus. And the demo
copy which I downloaded from sumex, was simply lovable. Well, Microsoft,
will you forgive me?
The actual application is as sleek as the demo until you start using it. I
will mention just a few features that horrified me most.
No, it isn't just slow - it completely redefines the term. My average file
length is about 50K. When you try to 'select all' in WriteNow, it takes
about couple of seconds. The Word will put you out of comission for about
10 sec. With the WordPerfect you can easily pour yourself a cup of coffee
and drink it. Literally - I am not joking. And if you want to convert a
same size file from Word, go out for a Big Mac, you won't miss anything.
The amount of time it takes to do any bulky operation is proportionate.
This thing makes the Word look lightning fast. I have never seen anything
that slow in all my Mac experience. And this is not on Mac Plus: PB 180 is
pretty fast otherwise.
Back to that 50k file. It takes about the same space in practically any
application. Not in WordPerfect though: it QUADRUPLES in size. Initially I
thought that must be some kind of conversion side effect, but it isn't:
start a file from scratch and it still about four times bigger than a
similar Word file. An alternative, of course, is the compressed saving
format (ROTFWL), which is about 1 (one) per cent smaller.
The WorldScript awareness is not without its holes. The boundaries of a
Russian word are not perceived, so Russian dictionaries seem out of the
question. The word count in Russian is about 10 per cent off, as with any
non-aware application.
To sum it up: if you have a gigabyte drive to spare (the program itself
takes about 8 meg) and plenty of free time, WordPerfect 3 is for you.

Just to pile more complaints. WordPerfect braggs about a zillion
customizable settings. True, you can customize a lot, except not everything
works. Thus, to load a pre-set page settings the manual advises to edit the
'normal' style. Fine and well, except that the style that loads is called
'none'.
When you try to close a file and the program asks whether you want to save
it, it presents the 'save as' dialog, as if it sees the file for the first
time. After saving the window remains open.
Even though you tell the program not to do any backup, it still leaves
backup files which are as huge as the original ones. You have to eliminate
them by hand.
Well, enough whining. What's the matter, however, with those people from
WordPerfect? Do they think nothing matters except interface? Are they just
a bunch of interface artists?
